Donald Trump's administration is moving forward with a major restructuring of the US diplomatic presence, considering the closure of nearly 30 embassies and consulates around the world, according to an internal State Department document leaked by CNN.

The list includes, among others, US embassies in Malta, Luxembourg, Lesotho, the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan.

At the same time, it is proposed to close five consulates in France, two in Germany, two in Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the United Kingdom, one in South Africa and one in South Korea.

The document also includes suggestions for reducing the presence in two countries "key" to US counterterrorism policy, Iraq and Somalia, as well as for "resizing" other diplomatic missions.

It is not yet known whether Secretary of State Marco Rubio has approved the proposals, while CNN has referred questions to the State Department for comment.

The upcoming changes are part of a broader plan to drastically redesign the functioning of the US government, which bears the stamp of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), the body created by Elon Musk, with the aim of simplifying and compressing the federal government.
