Nicolas Sarkozy expelled from the Legion of Honor

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been stripped of the Legion of Honor following his now final one-year prison sentence for corruption.

This was reported in a decree published in the Official Journal. The former French president, who was also stripped of the National Order of Merit, thus becomes the second French head of state to be stripped of this honor after Marshal Pétain, who was stripped of the Legion of Honor following his conviction in August 1945 for high treason and collaboration.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy has been found guilty by the Paris Court of Appeal of illegal financing of his 2012 re-election campaign.

Sarkozy was sentenced to one year in prison, half of which is suspended, which can be implemented through alternative means such as wearing an electronic bracelet without going to prison.

Sarkozy was president from 2007 to 2012. He has always denied accusations that his party worked with a public relations firm to hide the true cost of his campaign. (A2 Televizion)
