Investigations begin against Jack Smith, the special prosecutor who investigated

Federal officials in the US said they had launched an investigation into former special counsel Jack Smith, who led two criminal cases against President Donald Trump before resigning from his post earlier this year.

The Office of Special Counsel has confirmed to news agencies, including Reuters and the Associated Press, that it is investigating whether Smith violated the law that prohibits federal employees from using their position for political activities.

The office made the decision after a request for an investigation was launched by U.S. Senator Tom Cotton, Republican of Arkansas. Smith was appointed as special counsel in 2022 to investigate possible allegations of Trump's misuse of classified documents and his possible attempt to interfere in the 2020 election.

The special counsel's office does not have the authority to bring charges against Smith, but it can initiate disciplinary action or refer the findings to the Justice Department. (A2 Televizion)
