Congress in the United States has officially certified Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 presidential election. The Electoral College vote count went smoothly and there were no objections or concerns, a stark contrast to the scene four years ago, when rebels attacked Capitol during the certification of the 2020 presidential election.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who presided over the process as President of the Senate, announced the certification of the count. According to the law, that statement will be considered final or, in legal terms, "shall be considered a sufficient statement of the persons" elected president and vice president.
"Congress affirms our great election victory today, a great moment in history," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump and Vance won the election with 312 electoral votes. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, received 226 electoral votes.
Trump will be sworn in on January 20.
Republicans also took a majority in the US Senate and held a narrow lead in the House of Representatives in November's elections, which will give Trump the party support he needs to implement his planned tax-cutting agenda. and a crackdown on immigrants living in the country illegally.
Democrats did not try to block the certification of Trump's victory on Monday.
"We must renew our commitment to protect American democracy," said Democrat No. 2 of the House of Representatives, Katherine Clark, in a statement earlier in the day.
"As elected leaders, our allegiance must be to the Constitution, first and always. We are here to honor the will of the people and the rule of law," she said. (A2 Televizion)
