Rejecting the Americans, the Iranian delegation negotiates with European Foreign

The foreign ministers of Germany, France and Britain are expected to hold important talks on Iran's nuclear program this Friday in Geneva, along with their Iranian counterpart, in a joint European effort to avoid further escalation of the crisis in the Middle East.

According to a German diplomatic source who spoke to Reuters, the meeting will be preceded by a meeting with the European Union's top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, at Germany's permanent mission in Geneva. After that, a joint meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister will take place, writes A2 CNN.

The diplomatic initiative comes at a time of heightened tension after Israel launched a broad military strike against Iran last week, prompting Tehran to launch a barrage of missiles at Israeli targets. Fears of a wider regional conflict have grown, especially as US President Donald Trump has refused to clarify whether the US will join Israel's military campaign.

The main goal of the talks, which are coordinated with the United States, is for the Iranian side to provide clear and irrefutable guarantees that its nuclear program will have only civilian purposes. After the ministerial-level meeting, a more structured dialogue at the expert level is planned.

Israel has stated that it aims to dismantle any Iranian capacity to develop nuclear weapons, while Iran itself insists that its program has only peaceful and scientific purposes.

In a strong statement that provoked a sharp reaction in Tehran, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed full support for the Israeli attacks and warned Iran that further escalation would face “even greater devastation.” In the same vein, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called on Iranian leaders to commit to a peaceful solution, declaring: “It is never too late to come to the negotiating table.”

Europe, caught between its alliance with Israel and efforts to maintain regional stability, appears to be retaking an active role in international crisis management – a role that will depend heavily on the success of these talks in Geneva. (A2 Televizion)
