US President Donald Trump has said peace in Ukraine may be out of reach due to a "terrible hatred" between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Speaking from Air Force One, Trump confirmed that talks with Russia are underway, but did not provide details. He said there is still hope for an agreement, but the path to peace remains blocked.
"Hatred is fueling the war that has been ravaging Ukraine for more than three years now. A terrible hatred between two men, Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin. So much so that perhaps, peace is not possible. But there are excellent opportunities to achieve it."
Meanwhile, Putin, in a Russian documentary, claimed that Russia could win the war without using nuclear weapons. He added that "reconciliation with the Ukrainian people is inevitable," even as Moscow continues to bomb Ukrainian cities, including Kiev, where a recent attack wounded 11 people, including two children.
The Kremlin is proposing a three-day ceasefire to mark Victory Day on May 9, with Putin inviting leaders including Xi Jinping to Moscow. Zelensky has rejected the proposal, calling it cynical and implausible, citing previous broken promises by Russia. He noted that this week alone, Russia has used more than 1,180 attack drones and hundreds of bombs against Ukraine.
"This week alone, Russia has used more than 1,180 attack drones, 1,360 guided aerial bombs and 10 missiles of various types against Ukraine ," Zelensky said.
The US and Ukraine are seeking a ceasefire of at least 30 days. In this regard, the US is expected to transfer a Patriot defense system from Israel to Ukraine, while other options from Germany or Greece are also being discussed.
