The UN humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, has warned that 14,000 babies could die in Gaza within the next 48 hours unless more humanitarian aid is delivered.
"I want to save as many children as possible. We need to flood the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid. 14,000 is a really shocking number. It will be disappointing, we will stumble and we will take huge risks. But I don't see a better idea than giving food to the children," Fletcher told BBC Radio 4, according to A2 CNN.
Israel ended an 11-week blockade on aid entering Gaza on Monday, but Fletcher says only five trucks entered and the aid has not yet reached anyone.
Israeli airstrikes on Gaza overnight killed at least 50 Palestinians. The attacks came as the United Kingdom, France and Canada warned Israel to halt its "renewed military offensive" in Gaza and increase aid flows.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said "the war could end tomorrow" if Hamas releases its hostages and hands over its weapons. Some 58 hostages remain in Gaza, up to 23 are believed to be alive. (A2 Televizion)
