Vladimir Putin's threatened retaliation against Ukraine after last weekend's drone attacks has not yet happened, according to the United States, which is warning of a major and prolonged attack, A2 CNN reports.

The timing of the Russian response is unclear, according to a US official quoted by Reuters, although it is thought to be within the next few days. A second source claims that the retaliation will likely involve various types of air capabilities, including missiles and drones.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, did not elaborate on Russia's possible targets. One of them said Moscow's attack would be asymmetric, meaning the approach and targets targeted would not match Kiev's strikes against Russian warplanes, A2 CNN reports.

Moscow launched an intense wave of missile and drone strikes on the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Friday, with the Russian defense ministry saying they were in response to what it called Ukrainian acts of terrorism. According to a Western diplomatic source, Russia's retaliation may have begun but would likely intensify further, targeting symbolic Ukrainian targets, such as government buildings, in an attempt to send a clear message to Kiev.

Another Western official warned that Moscow's attack would be large, savage and ruthless.

Ukraine said last weekend's daring attack involved 117 drones launched deep into Russian territory in an operation codenamed "Spider Web." According to U.S. estimates, 20 of Moscow's warplanes were hit, and about 10 of them were destroyed. (A2 Televizion)
