Wrongly declared dead, 78-year-old man 3 months without pension, social

A 78-year-old man from Posta Fibreno in Frosinone, Italy, has not received his pension since March because he is listed as dead, even though he is not. Italian media reports that it all started with a wrongly filled-in death certificate, and now the Social Security Institute is asking for a document proving that the man is alive. The 78-year-old went to the office of the National Social Security Institute, but his presence was not enough, as a document was needed.

"For us, you are dead. If you want to prove otherwise, bring a document that proves you are alive," were more or less the words the old man heard, Italian media report, according to A2 CNN.

The 78-year-old learned about this situation in March, when he went to the INPS offices to seek explanations regarding the non-payment of his pension and was told that he had died.

The error arose from a real death, that of a 90-year-old family member, who passed away on February 24. In the chaos of compiling the death documents to be submitted to the funeral home, identities were mixed up and on one of the two death certificates, instead of the deceased's name, the 78-year-old is listed.

The communication sent two days later by the ASL, which had already noticed the oversight, to the Institute to correct the error caused by a pen was of no use, but was translated into 'immediate termination of salary,'" writes A2 CNN.

The man's lawyer, Antonio Lecce, sent an official warning to the ASL of Frosinone, giving it a specific time to correct the "negligence", and to send the corrected certificate to INPS, INAIL and MEF, otherwise the case will go to court.

"It's all so absurd, I can't believe it. But above all, I need that money, I have no other source of income," the man comments.  (A2 Televizion)
