The plan presented by the US government to end the war in Ukraine is a failure from the start, writes FAZ. For Ukraine, several key points of the plan are unacceptable – in particular, the recognition of Crimea as Russian territory. Meanwhile, the regime in Moscow has no reason to make any concessions, since it risks nothing if it refuses. Trump is not even trying to put serious pressure on the Kremlin. He could do this if he showed it the tools at his disposal: more military support for Ukraine and tougher sanctions. Instead, the US government is showing itself to be obedient in advance, accepting Moscow's essential demands without demanding anything in return from Putin, A2 reports.

Washington's warning that it will withdraw from mediation efforts if the warring parties do not accept the American proposals causes only an ironic smile in Moscow. Putin's spokesman commented on this by saying that he sees no danger - and called the American proposals worthless, since anything made public during the talks, according to him, immediately becomes ineffective.
Even if Donald Trump really gives up on trying to end the fighting, Moscow has nothing to lose. Even if the normalization of relations with Washington does not happen, as the Kremlin wants, Putin would be better off than before. Because the American proposals – which are almost entirely to the detriment of Ukraine – clearly show that Kiev has lost its most powerful ally. The divisions within the Western alliance will deepen even more because of these developments. And – this is also a victory from Putin’s point of view – Trump undermines the authority of the United States by showing how easily it can be manipulated. (A2 Televizion)
