A religious leader from the victorious Hayat Tahrir al-Sham rebel group said the tree would be restored and the people who burned it would be punished.

Hundreds of people have protested in Christian areas of the Syrian capital Damascus after a video emerged showing hooded fighters setting fire to a Christmas tree elsewhere in the country.

"We demand the rights of Christians," chanted demonstrators as they marched through the city on Christmas Eve, foreign media reported, A2 CNN writes.

The overthrow of Bashar al Assad by rebels led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), a group once linked to al Qaeda, has sparked concern for Syria's religious minorities, but the group's leader has insisted all faiths will be respected .

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the men were foreigners from the Islamist group Ansar al Tawhid.

One demonstrator who gave his name as Georges said he was protesting "injustice against Christians".

"If we are not allowed to live our Christian faith in our country, as we used to, then we no longer belong to this country," he said.

A religious leader from HTS, the main rebel group in the coalition that ousted Assad, claimed those who set fire to the tree "were not Syrian" and promised they would be punished.

"The tree will be restored and illuminated by tomorrow morning," he said, writes A2 CNN. (A2 Televizion)
