Chinese President Xi Jinping warned on Tuesday that a trade war with the United States would not result in a winner, state media reported.
Xi made these statements shortly before the inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump in January.
Trump, the former US president, has pushed the trade war with China throughout his first term in the White House, and has accused the country of intellectual property theft and other "unfair" practices.
He has vowed to impose even higher tariffs on China in his second term as Beijing continues to grapple with a slow economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.
"Tariff wars, trade wars and technological wars are against economic trends, economic rules, and there can be no winners," Xi said about China-US relations, after a meeting with the heads of financial institutions in Beijing.
"China is willing to continue dialogue with the US government, expand cooperation, manage differences and promote China-US relations in a stable, healthy and sustainable direction," Xi said.
