Photos of son's luxurious vacation published, prime minister resigns

Mongolia's Prime Minister Luvsannamsrain Oyun-Erdene has resigned after weeks of mass protests and the launch of a corruption investigation, sparked by photos posted on social media showing his son's lavish lifestyle. The photos, which went viral, showed the prime minister's son and his girlfriend sporting Dior bags and going on a lavish holiday to celebrate their engagement.

These images raised questions about the source of the prime minister's family's wealth, in a country where corruption has long been a concern.

Despite Oyun-Erdene denying any involvement in illegal affairs and calling it a smear campaign against him, he lost the vote of confidence in parliament, writes A2 CNN. Of the 88 deputies who participated in the secret ballot, 44 voted against him, while 38 supported him. To remain in office, he needed at least 64 votes out of 126 in total.

"It has been an honor to serve my country and people in times of challenge, including pandemics, wars and tariffs," Oyun-Erdene said after resigning.

The protests, led mainly by young people, began two weeks before the vote in Sukhbaatar Square in the capital Ulaanbaatar.

According to Transparency International, corruption in Mongolia has worsened under Oyun-Erdene. The country ranked 114th out of 180 countries for government transparency last year. Mongolia, nestled between Russia and China, is trying to strengthen relations with the West. (A2 Televizion)
