Normality returns, emergency remains. Spain and Portugal without answer for

With the dawn of a new day, the lights came on. After many hours of chaos, normality has returned to Spain and Portugal, but many questions remain about the fault that led to the failure of the electricity distribution network.

"Regarding the causes, we are hearing from Red Electrica technicians that the line was disconnected in just 5 seconds. Specialists have not yet discovered what caused this defect, but they will determine it. All institutions, public and private, are working together to understand what happened. All possible causes are being analyzed. We are not ruling out any hypothesis," said Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The cause of the power outages is still unknown, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said, adding that there was “no indication” of a cyberattack. A state of emergency remains in force in Spain, A2 CNN reports. Public transport services by bus, metro and tram have returned to normal. But the same cannot be said for flights and normal airport operations. Authorities are warning passengers of flight delays or cancellations due to the chaos caused by the power outage. According to the electricity grid operators of Spain and Portugal, the outage began at around 11:33 a.m. on Monday and was caused by a rare atmospheric phenomenon.

As the British newspaper The Guardian recalls, operators explained that strong temperature changes in the interior of Spain caused “induced atmospheric vibrations” in very high voltage lines (400 kV), generating serious oscillations and synchronization failures between electrical systems. This has caused successive disconnections of power plants, including one in France, destabilizing the entire Iberian grid. The power outage, described as the most serious ever recorded in Europe, blocked flights, trains, mobile networks and essential services in several cities. (A2 Televizion)
