Increasing defense spending, British Prime Minister to meet NATO chief

British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will hold a one-on-one meeting with NATO chief Mark Rutte in London next week.

According to foreign media, the prime minister's spokesman said: "You can expect the prime minister to raise the issue of how we can ensure that all allies deliver on their stated promises in support of our collective defence, to keep people safe."

The spokesman continued: “It is worth recognising the UK’s track record in spending and indeed our contribution to NATO, both in terms of our spending and our capabilities.”

It is thought that Rutte is urging NATO members to pledge to spend 3.5% of GDP on the military and 1.5% on measures related to defense and security.

Starmer has so far said only that the country hopes to reach 3% for defence during the next Parliament, having reached 2.5% by 2027. (A2 Televizion)
