Tons of oil leak in Norway, sabotage suspected at transformer station

About 60,000 tons of oil leaked into a transformer station near Oslo on Sunday after the facility was reported to have been breached.

On Monday, Norwegian police said they were investigating the break-in at an unused electricity transformer station in the Bærum municipality of Norway.

Part of the fence surrounding the premises had been cut and the cover at the bottom of the transformer had been unscrewed and left open. National power grid operator Statnett believes the incident was a deliberate act of sabotage.

"It appears that someone broke and removed a cover on the transformer and left it open, causing a significant amount of oil to spill," said Thomas Fennefoss, Project Manager at Statnett.

However, police authorities said in a statement that they currently have no concrete evidence to confirm this.

The oil, which is harmful to the environment but not to humans, reached the Sandvikselva River near the station. Some of the oil has also seeped underground.

Richard Kongsteien, Communications Manager for Bærum Municipality, said efforts are being made to minimize the impact on the environment. Oil barriers and absorbers have been deployed to contain and clean up the spill. (A2 Televizion)
