The European Union is facing its most direct threat in decades. That is the alarm raised by the European Union's High Representative, Kaja Kallas, who addressed the European Parliament in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
With the NATO summit in The Hague approaching, Kallas called for urgent investment in defense and unwavering support for Ukraine. Describing Russia as a growing aggressor, Kallas accused it of violating EU airspace, cyber espionage and attacks on infrastructure.
She warned that Moscow now spends more on defense than on health, education and social policies combined, which she said underscores the long-term plan of aggression. The solution to countering it, according to Kallas, is unity.
The Estonian diplomat stressed that countries bordering Russia have long felt the burden of its provocations, while urging all European allies to take defense spending seriously.
"Europe must prepare for the 5 percent GDP target, due to drastic geopolitical changes," Kallas said.
The bloc's foreign minister described Ukraine as the first line of European defense, insisting that support for the country should increase. (A2 Televizion)
