Russia increases aggression against Kiev, Germany is preparing a giant arms

As part of the creation of additional Bundeswehr brigades to support NATO, Germany is considering the procurement of up to 2,500 armored personnel carriers and up to 1,000 main battle tanks, German media reported.

NATO has asked Germany to provide the alliance with up to seven additional combat brigades over the next decade. Combat vehicles and tanks, if approved, would be used to equip the forces, insiders told Bloomberg. The troop surge reflects growing concern among allies about Moscow's increasingly aggressive stance since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The order, which is currently being reviewed by Defense Minister Boris Pistorius together with the Bundeswehr military leadership, will include up to 1,000 Leopard 2 main battle tanks and up to 2,500 GTK Boxer wheeled armored personnel carriers. The main battle tanks will be manufactured by German firms, while the infantry fighting vehicles will be manufactured by ARTEC.

According to internal sources, the total value of the contract could be up to 25 billion euros. However, as procurement negotiations are still ongoing, the final figure could be lower.

Germany had pledged to add additional brigades to meet new NATO capability targets agreed at a summit in the Netherlands in June. Apart from main battle tanks and armoured fighting vehicles, Berlin received initial approval earlier this year to buy more than 1,000 modular armoured vehicles from Finnish defence company Patria. These are said to be intended to replace the Bundeswehr’s ageing Fuchs tanks. (A2 Televizion)
