Jokes are getting out of control among the leaders of North American countries. Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, entered the renaming race by bringing back a 1607 map of that continent. She suggested that North America, including the United States, could be renamed "Mexican America", a historical name used on an early map of the region, responding to US President-elect Donald Trump's warning that to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America".
"The United Nations recognizes the name Gulf of Mexico, but why don't we call this Mexican America? Doing well, right? The Constitution of Apatzingan called it Mexican America since 1607. So Let's call it Mexican America. The Gulf of Mexico has been named since 1607 and is also internationally recognized," said Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico.
The president, who has clashed with Trump in recent weeks, used her daily press conference to deliver a history lesson, surrounded by old maps. It also rejected the US president-elect's claim that Mexico is being run by drug cartels. Trump stirred up the world by demanding not only the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico, but taking control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, as well as suggesting the possible annexation of Canada.
These territorial claims have been commented with concern in Europe. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that Trump's partners in the European Union do not understand his statements about Greenland and Canada. France's foreign minister took a harsher tone, underlining that the EU will not tolerate attacks on member states' borders, referring to Denmark, as Greenland is part of its territory.
