Scientists have warned that Earth could be hit by a major volcanic eruption this century, with no plans in place to protect it.
Such an event, according to the climate expert, Dr. Markus Stoffel, could cause a "climate chaos" similar to the 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia. This explosion released 24 cubic miles of gases and dust into the atmosphere, causing a drastic drop in global temperatures.
In addition to the impact of temperatures, this situation created an increase in diseases, where thousands of people died. Unlike the "Year Without Summer" that followed the eruption of Tambora, a 21st century volcano would add further problems due to humanity's dependence on fossil fuels. Dr. Michael Rampino explains that the effect may be worse than in 1815, as the world is more unstable now.
The research of Dr. Thomas Aubry suggest that a hotter atmosphere will more quickly disperse sulfuric gas and the aerosols it forms, intensifying the cooling effect. (A2 Televizion)
