The Taliban government in Afghanistan has announced that 46 people, including women and children, have lost their lives in airstrikes carried out by Pakistan in the east of the country. The incident happened on Tuesday evening in the Barmal district of Paktika province, a region near the border between the two countries.
The Taliban government spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, confirmed the tragedy and strongly condemned Pakistan's action. “There was Pakistani shelling in Barmal district. The total number of martyrs is 46, most of whom are women and children," he declared, adding that there were also 6 wounded.
The attack has caused anger and shock in the local community, while the Afghan authorities have described the event as a serious act of aggression. Some of the affected areas have been completely destroyed, while local emergency teams are trying to manage the situation and help survivors.
This is not the first time that the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan has become a point of tension. The two countries have long had strained relations, which worsened after the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021.
Spokesman Mujahid called on the international community to intervene to stop such actions that harm the lives of innocent civilians. "We strongly condemn this unacceptable act and demand that Pakistan be pressured to respect the borders and lives of our people," he added.
