Indonesia's most active volcano erupts, the number of victims rises to 22

At least 22 people have lost their lives as a result of the eruption of the Marapi volcano in western Indonesia. The number of victims initially reported was lower, but today nine more bodies were found by rescue teams.

Meanwhile, there is also a person who turns out to be missing.

We recall that Sumatra's most active volcano erupted on Sunday, sending its ash 3,000 meters into the sky, higher than the volcano itself.

"Nine of the ten missing persons were found dead this afternoon and their bodies are currently being transported. We are still looking for a victim," Abdul Malik, director of rescue services in the city of Padang, told AFP.

Hundreds of Indonesian rescuers have mobilized for the search, which continues in difficult conditions due to bad weather and ash that continues to flow from the volcano.

Ahmad Rifadi, head of the Marapi Observatory, observed five explosions between midnight and 8am local time.

"Marapi is still very active. We cannot see the height of the (ash) column because it is covered by clouds,” he explained.
