Flooding Gaza tunnels with seawater, Israel restores plan to exterminate Hamas

Israel may flood Gaza tunnels with seawater. The Wall Street Journal has relaunched a story that appeared a month ago on a plan studied by the Tel Aviv military.

Engineers have already transferred at least 5 pumping systems to the Belt area, but there is still no decision on whether to continue the action.

However, the idea is not new, as years ago the Egyptians used a similar method by diverting sewage to the Rafah area, at the border point with the Palestinian territory. This movement was linked to the presence of tunnels dug by smugglers, but then also used by militias.

Meanwhile, the IDF Joint Chiefs of Staff considered the countermeasure a method of dealing with what is considered a serious threat and also passed the information on to the United States, where it has been met with mixed reactions.

There are, in fact, several obstacles, even considered by the Israelis themselves. The first concerns the fate of the hostages still in Palestinian hands. Testimonies from those who were released have confirmed that many of the prisoners were locked in underground structures and therefore flooding could prove fatal for those still held in these facilities.

The second problem is represented by the dangers for the territory, possibly damaged by sea water. Finally, there are unknowns about the effectiveness of the operation, doubts fueled by the limited knowledge of the network dug up by the guerrillas over the years.

" It is possible ", - say some - " that the system turns out to be insufficient, while the details known about the network of Hamas tunnels are partial ".

Hamas, like other factions, has often highlighted the importance of the tunnels, shown sections of video showing their combat use, and claimed responsibility for building tens of kilometers.

Israel, on the other hand, has presented the tunnels as one of the most important components of the adversary's fortification and not only, as the IDF and Mossad have spent thousands of money to find answers, conducting studies, even creating barriers to entry on the ground along the border to stop Palestinian crossings.

With the start of the offensive, the search for tunnels became a priority and was entrusted to special forces, engineers and air forces. A senior official, anonymously, hypothesized the use of "industrial" measures, involving experts from the mining sector.

An indirect confirmation of the will to act but also of the search for solutions. According to military sources, 800 "entrances" (or exits) have been located and at least 500 of them have been destroyed. But, as always, the reality remains dark, caught between concrete dangers, propaganda and maneuvers to confuse the opponent. (A2 Televizion)
