Donald Trump dares to joke about the Conclave by declaring that his first choice for the new Pope is himself. The American president, however, has made his choice by specifying that there is a cardinal in New York who could very well lead the Vatican, a reference to Archbishop Timothy Dolan.

"Preference for Pope? I would like to be Pope, that would be my first choice. I don't know. I don't have a preference. But I have to say that we have a cardinal who is in a place called New York who is very good. But let's see what happens," Trump said.

The secret conclave will convene at the Vatican to elect a pope on May 7. The process to appoint the new leader of the worldwide Catholic Church will last a maximum of three days. About 135 cardinals, all under the age of 80 and from around the world, are eligible to participate in the conclave and decide who should be the next leader of the 1.4 billion-member Church.

“Everyone has a list of candidates in their hearts,” emphasized Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chavez, adding that “the name and style are still missing, but the direction is already clear.” The conclave, he explains, is quite open and there may be surprises, as has always happened in the history of the Church.
