Severe weather hit much of Greece on Monday afternoon, causing significant damage in the Cyclades islands. The hardest hit was the island of Paros, where heavy rains created powerful water currents that swept away vehicles and triggered landslides.
At around 5:30 p.m., authorities sent an emergency message to residents and visitors to Paros, banning vehicle traffic due to the serious situation.
"Vehicle movement prohibited on the roads of Paros due to extreme weather conditions. Only emergency vehicles are exempt," the 112 announcement said.
The mayor of Paros, Kostas Bizas, said that there had been continuous rainfall for two hours, causing rockfalls and swollen rivers. The island's municipality urged residents to stay put until the situation improved, confirming extensive damage to roads, including flooding and collapse of road segments.
The bad weather has also affected Mykonos, where another message from 112 was sent just before 7:00 PM, halting vehicle traffic. The island has been hit by heavy hail, followed by heavy rain, turning roads into rivers.
The storm has also affected other Cycladic islands such as Syros, but also regions in Evia and the Peloponnese, bringing heavy rain and hail. Authorities continue to work to manage the emergency situation while calling on citizens to follow instructions for their safety.
