Air traffic at Bergamo's Orio al Serio airport was suspended for several hours due to the death of a person on the runway.
Italian media reports that the man was sucked into the engine of a Volotea plane that was taking off from the airport runway.
The victim is neither an airport employee nor a passenger, but a person who apparently walked onto the runway intentionally to end his life. The man was pursued by police, who were unable to stop him as he ran towards the already moving plane.
The reasons for the serious act he committed are currently unknown, as is how he managed to enter the runway from outside the airport.
The plane involved in the accident is an Airbus A319 of the Volotea airline, which was departing from Bergamo to Asturias, Spain.
It appears that the plane had just left the area where the passengers had boarded when the accident occurred.
During the closure of Orio al Serio airport, some incoming flights were diverted to Milan-Malpensa, Verona and Bologna. Flights then resumed at noon. (A2 Televizion)
