More than 1,500 inmates escaped from a maximum security prison near the capital Maputo, taking advantage of the chaos caused by violent protests that followed the announcement of the Frelimo party as the winner of the election.
The head of the national police, Bernardino Rafael, confirmed at a press conference that 1,534 prisoners, including those convicted of serious crimes, escaped during the unrest that swept the country.
