Trump: Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, it's that simple

United States President Donald Trump said he wants a "real end" to the nuclear problem with Iran, stressing that he wants Iran to "completely give up" nuclear weapons.

Trump made these statements to reporters on the US presidential plane, while returning to Washington after attending the summit of the Group of Seven (G7) most industrialized countries, which was held in Canada.

"They should give up completely," Trump told reporters on June 17.

"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, it's that simple."

Since Friday, Israel and Iran have been repeatedly attacking each other, after Israel launched an air campaign that it said was targeting Tehran's nuclear program and military facilities.

Trump said he could send the US envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, or Vice President JD Vance, to meet with Iran. However, he added that "it depends on what happens when I get back."

When asked whether Israel should reduce the intensity of its attacks on Iran, Trump said, "We'll figure that out in a couple of days. Neither side has reduced the intensity so far."

The American leader also said that he has not seen any signals so far that North Korea or Russia have been involved in helping Iran.

According to him, Washington is working to help Americans who are trying to leave the region due to violence.

Since the start of mutual attacks on Friday between the two Middle Eastern rivals, officials in Iran have reported more than 220 deaths, mostly civilians, while Israel has said 24 civilians have been killed.

Israel, the US and other Western countries have long called on Iran not to develop nuclear weapons.

Iran denies it wants to develop such weapons, but says it has the right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

Washington said Trump still aims to reach a nuclear deal with Iran. However, Trump said he is not aiming to reach a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and has not contacted Iran about holding nuclear talks.

"If they want to talk to me, they know how to contact me. They should have accepted the deal that was on the table. It would have saved many lives," Trump wrote on Truth Social,

The US and Iran were scheduled to hold a sixth round of nuclear talks last weekend. But the meeting was canceled after escalating attacks between Israel and Iran. /REL (A2 Televizion)
