Trump postpones decision on tariffs on Mexico for a month

US President Donald Trump said he would temporarily halt planned tariffs on Mexico for a month, adding that negotiations would continue to reach a "deal" between the two countries.

Trump, in a post on social media after his phone call with his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, said that he will participate in talks with the Mexican side, along with leaders of the US Departments of State, Treasury and Commerce.

"We agreed to an immediate pause in the planned tariffs for one month, during which time we will conduct negotiations. I look forward to participating in these negotiations with President Sheinbaum as we attempt to reach a 'deal' between our two countries," Trump wrote.

The Mexican president also announced the suspension of tariffs and added that teams will begin work today in two areas: security and trade.

Over the weekend, Trump ordered the imposition of 25 percent tariffs on all goods, while Mexico also responded with tariffs, but without specifying which products they would target.

During the conversation with Trump, Sheinbaum said that her state has agreed to send 10,000 National Guard troops to the US border to stop drugs from flowing into the US, especially fentanyl.

Meanwhile, the US president said that Mexican troops will also work to stop illegal immigrants from entering the US.

In addition to Mexico, Trump has also ordered tariffs on Canada and China, countries that have threatened to retaliate but have also called for trade talks instead of tariffs. US tariffs could raise prices for consumers and hurt the economies of all parties involved.

Trump has said he has imposed these tariffs on US neighbors until the flow of illegal immigrants and fentanyl into the United States is stopped.

The US president had said that all goods from Canada and Mexico would be hit with a 25 percent tariff, while Canadian energy products would be hit with a 10 percent tariff. A 10 percent tax would also be imposed on goods from China, in addition to the tariffs already imposed.

The decision on tariffs against these countries - excluding Mexico - is expected to take effect on February 4./ REL (A2 Televizion)
