US President Donald Trump, who is renovating the White House to his liking, will build a massive ballroom for official receptions. It is one of the largest projects for a US presidential residence in the last 100 years.
Trump himself and unspecified donors will pay for the $200 million project, White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt said at a press conference last night, A2 CNN reports.
"There's never been a president who's good in the ballroom," the 79-year-old president and former real estate developer told reporters about his latest attempt to make his mark in the White House.
"I'm good at building things and we're going to build it quickly and on schedule. It's going to be beautiful," Trump said, assuring that the character of the original building will be preserved.
The new structure will span over 8,000 square feet and have a seating capacity of 650 people, according to Leavitt. Work on the ballroom, a long-held project by Trump, will begin in September and is expected to be completed "well before" the end of his second term in January 2029, Leavitt said, A2 CNN reports.
The hope is that it will be able to host large state dinners, organized in honor of foreign heads of state visiting Washington. Until now, these have usually been organized by erecting a large tent on the White House grounds.
