US President Donald Trump's 10-day deadline for significantly higher tariffs on Russia's trading partners begins on Wednesday. "Ten days from now," Trump told reporters on his return flight from Scotland to the US on Thursday. The tariffs will then be imposed.
On Monday, the US president increased the pressure on Russia in an effort to end its aggressive war against Ukraine. He announced that he would reduce the 50-day deadline for significantly higher tariffs on Russia's trading partners to "ten or twelve" days. Now he repeated that and clarified the counting method.
With his threat of tariffs, Trump aims to further weaken the Kremlin's economic base by putting increasing pressure on key buyers like China and India. Trump has not yet specified which countries could be specifically affected by this.
Trump's spokeswoman recently mentioned the oil sector. If there is no ceasefire agreement or peace agreement within the specified deadline, countries that import oil from Russia will be sanctioned.
The Kremlin did not seem impressed by the US threats. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia had "taken into account Trump's statement. The special operation is continuing," he added, using the euphemism for Moscow's war of aggression against Ukraine.
On Tuesday evening, Russia again attacked Ukraine with drones and missiles. According to Ukrainian sources, more than 20 people were killed. (A2 Televizion)
