Trump continues war on immigration, removes protected status for 530,000

US President Donald Trump's administration will withdraw the temporary legal status of 530,000 Cubans, Haitians, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans in the United States, in the latest move against immigration.

As the Federal Register reported, these immigrants have been warned to leave the country before their temporary resident status or deportation shield expires on April 24, A2 CNN reports.

530,000 immigrants came to the US under a Biden-led program known as CHNV that was intended to create opportunities for legal migration. Trump suspended the program shortly after taking office. It is unclear how many of these immigrants were able to secure another status that would allow them to stay in the US, A2 CNN reports.

Introduced in 2022, the program initially covered Venezuelans before expanding to other countries. It allowed immigrants and their immediate family members to fly to the US if they had an American sponsor and stay for two years as part of a temporary status.

The Biden administration claimed that such a scheme would limit illegal crossings at the southern US border and allow for better vetting of those entering the country. But Trump said the program exceeded federal law, and sought to close it in an executive order signed on January 20. Trump is also considering revoking the legal status of some 240,000 Ukrainians who arrived in the US during the conflict with Russia. (A2 Televizion)
