Von der Leyen: This week will be decisive for ending the war in Ukraine

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said this week would be crucial in creating the conditions that could end Russia's war against Ukraine.

The statement was made during a trilateral meeting in Rome between her, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US Vice President JD Vance. The meeting focused on global challenges, including Russian aggression in Ukraine.

"I would also like to raise the topic of Ukraine. What unites us is the desire for a just and lasting peace. I know how much you are committed to ending this war, and I thank you for that," said Von der Leyen, addressing the US vice president.

She added that the current moment requires action and determination: " What is certainly important now is to push forward to move things towards a solution. I think the next week will be decisive in this regard."

Meanwhile, it has been announced that on Monday, May 19, former US President Donald Trump is expected to hold a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and then with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

This development raises hopes for new diplomatic moves in an attempt to end the conflict that has rocked Europe and the world for more than two years. (A2 Televizion)
