European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that the EU will increase pressure on Vladimir Putin to force him to accept peace in Ukraine.
Von der Leyen made the comments from Tirana, where the European Political Community meeting is being held and where leaders of various EU countries are present.
She also said that it is clear that Putin is not interested in peace, adding that the EU will prepare a new package of sanctions against the Russian financial sector.
"Putin called for a ceasefire on May 9, but never implemented it. Meanwhile, Ukraine demanded a ceasefire supported by the US and EU, but Putin rejected it. Putin then proposed that Russia and Ukraine meet directly in Turkey for talks.
Zelensky agreed, but Putin didn't show up. So we will increase pressure on Russia, we will work on a package of sanctions, sanctions that apply to Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2.
"We will lower the oil price ceiling and then we will have other sanctions on the Russian financial sector. Because we want peace and we will exert pressure until Putin does this," Von der Leyen said. (A2 Televizion)
