The most notorious criminal in Caracas, 39-year-old Alexander Acevedo Monasterios, alias 'el Wilexis', was killed by police on Thursday morning in the "La Lagunita" neighborhood, while carrying two 9 mm pistols and an unexploded grenade.
This was announced today by the Minister of Interior, Security and Peace, Diosdado Cabello, in a statement broadcast on state television.
Wilexis was on the 'most wanted' list in Venezuela and authorities had set a $150,000 reward for his capture.
After the presidential elections of last July 28, the Petare neighborhood was one of the most active in the protests against the Venezuelan government, becoming the first bastion to openly challenge President Nicolás Maduro.
The announcement of Wilexis' death comes on the eve of January 23, a symbolic date in Venezuela for the restoration of democracy against the dictatorship of General Marcos Pérez Jiménez. (A2 Televizion)
