Mysterious US spy plane flight over Mexican cartel hot spot revealed

A U.S. Air Force spy plane flew a mysterious mission over the Gulf of California in Mexico this week. The RC-135 Rivet Joint, an intelligence-gathering and surveillance aircraft, flew from Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, passing along the west coast of the Baja California peninsula and then moving north into the Gulf of California. The plane remained in international airspace, without violating Mexican territorial waters.

The mission has sparked speculation, as the flight area is known for the presence of the Sinaloa cartel, one of the most powerful drug trafficking groups. According to some sources, it is possible that the US used this flight to collect information that supports military operations, enabling the detection and tracking of communications.

This mission could be a response to agreements between the US and Mexico, following a suspension of tariff threats by former President Donald Trump, writes A2 CNN.

The RC-135 aircraft has the capacity to collect, analyze and disseminate information in real time and has been frequently used for surveillance and intelligence in hot spots like this. The connection between US military activities and the fight against drug trafficking on the Mexican border remains a controversial topic, including the engagement of Mexican security forces and support for border surveillance.
