Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has appointed Major General Andriy Hnatov as the new chief of the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army, in an effort to accelerate military reforms and increase the combat readiness of the armed forces.
The decree published on Sunday on the official website of the presidency announced that Hnatov will replace Lieutenant General Anatoliy Barhilevych, who will now focus on overseeing standards and strengthening discipline in the army.
Defense Minister Rustem Umerov said the changes to the army are part of an effort to make it more combat-ready, by improving the management system and setting clear standards.
Hnatov, with 27 years of military experience, most recently served as a marine brigade commander and served in the eastern Donetsk region, one of the hottest spots in the war against Russia. Ukraine is seeking to restructure and strengthen its military as it battles Russian forces in its fourth year of war.
With an army consisting of around 880,000 soldiers, Ukraine continues efforts to better prepare for the challenges posed by the ongoing war. (A2 Televizion)
