Kosovo continues its efforts to extend the rule of law in the north of the country. The authorities closed this Thursday two public enterprises that operated according to the Serbian system in North Mitrovica. Specifically, the Directorate for Residential and Business Space and the Directorate for Building Land.
The offices were located in a residential building in North Mitrovica. In a statement on social networks, the Minister of Internal Affairs of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla, said that an institution has been closed which illegally collected payments from citizens and numerous businesses for the use of facilities that were under their management.
In his post, Svečla also published a video which appears to show a picture of Russian President Vladimir Putin and emblems of the Serbian state inside the facility.
"This misuse carried out under the flags and emblems of Serbia, apart from being closed today, will be investigated to the end", said Svecla.
Meanwhile, the deputy director of the police for the north, Veton Elshani, tells Radio Free Europe that it was found that illegal and parallel structures were working in these areas, and that they have started investigations into document forgery. After the closure of the offices, the Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia reacted by saying that "the institutions of Serbia in the north are being occupied" and that these steps are "in contradiction with the agreements".
She called on the international community in Kosovo to take immediate measures and "prevent the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, from causing conflicts".
Meanwhile, Lista Serbe, the largest party of Serbs in Kosovo, announced that the "entry" of Kosovo authorities into Serbian enterprises will not put the 70 employees at risk, and that they will continue to receive their salaries. (A2 Televizion)
