At the Jarinje border crossing – which connects Kosovo with Serbia – Kosovo Police said they have detained a person suspected of war crimes against the civilian population.
According to the announcement, the detained person, identified by the initials DR, is suspected of having committed this criminal offense in the municipality of Gjakova in the period 7-10 May 1999, "acting in a group and organized as an official mobilized with units composed of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Serbia".
Police said that in the presence of his defense attorney, the suspect was interviewed by police officers.
"The prosecutor of the case at the Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo has been informed of all investigative actions and has issued a decision to detain the suspect for 48 hours, in accordance with the legal procedures in force," the announcement said.
Kosovo prosecutors have recently filed dozens of indictments related to crimes that occurred during the 1998-99 war.
War crimes in Kosovo from 2000 to 2008 were investigated by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), then by the European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX).
Meanwhile, since 2018, EULEX has handed over cases to Kosovo prosecutors and courts.
In the last war in Kosovo, more than 13,000 people were killed and thousands more disappeared. More than 1,600 people remain missing, most of them Albanians./ REL (A2 Televizion)
