Christopher Hyland, a close associate of former US President Bill Clinton, declared from Pristina that Donald Trump, if he were prime minister of Kosovo, would act in the same way as Albin Kurti.
Asked by A2 CNN if there had been any damage to relations between Kosovo and the United States after Kurti was criticized for this, Hyland said that it could be “some temporary misunderstanding”: “I have always said, and I will say it again, I believe that if President Trump were prime minister of Kosovo, he would follow almost exactly the same policies, certainly from a foreign relations perspective. And I think that we will continue to recognize that Kosovo will be and should be an important part of NATO. And for that reason I believe that whatever temporary misunderstanding there may be at this moment is just that - temporary.”
Hyland, who was also Bill Clinton's presidential campaign manager, also touched on the dialogue with Serbia. He blamed official Belgrade for hindering the progress of the dialogue, as this only benefits Serbia.
"I think the United States of America should allow a mature democracy, specifically Kosovo, to move as much as possible towards an agreement with Serbia. But be sure of one thing: Serbia is continuously hindering this progress because they benefit greatly when there is no progress. They receive all kinds of rewards from the European Union, from Russia, from China, from every power. It is very important to understand this. As long as Serbia keeps this division alive, there will be no progress, but there will be benefits for Serbia," Hyland said.
Hyland made these statements after a meeting with acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, who was said to have discussed current developments and topics in the country, the country's potential and advantages for foreign investors, as well as the importance of special relations and close cooperation between the Republic of Kosovo and the United States of America.
