The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, Anastas Janullatos, has passed away at the age of 95, A2 CNN reports. The announcement was made by the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, which said that Archbishop Janullatos passed away at the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where he had been hospitalized after his health deteriorated.
"The Archbishop passed away today, January 25, 2025, at 08:30 in the morning, at the age of 95, at the 'Evangelismos' hospital in Athens, as a result of the insufficient functioning of many organs. Previously, he had been treated for several days in a private hospital in Tirana. We invite the Orthodox believers of the Church of Albania to pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased Archbishop.
His Beatitude, Archbishop Anastasios, was the rebuilder and reviver of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, which he completely raised from the ruins after the fall of the atheist regime. With his divine vision and tireless work, he rebuilt church life from the foundations, built hundreds of churches, created educational and charitable institutions, and formed a new generation of clergy, offering an uninterrupted and sacrificial service for more than 33 years. May his memory be eternal! ”, writes the Autocephalous Orthodox Church.
Janullatos was the Archbishop of the Orthodox Church of Albania since 1992. He was honored with 27 medals and awards and in 2000 was nominated for the Nobel Prize.

The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania Prof. Dr. Anastas Janullatos (YANNOULATOS) held the titles:

He was born on November 4, 1929, in Piraeus, Greece.
Studies
In 1947 he completed high school with distinction. In 1953 he graduated with distinction from the National University of Athens. In 1965-69 he completed postgraduate studies in History of Religions, Ethnology, Missiology and Africanology at the Universities of Hamburg and Marburg. He undertook research at Makerere University, in Kampala-Uganda, with a scholarship from the German “Alexander von Humboldt” Foundation. He is an Honorary Doctor of the Faculty of Theology of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (1970, Summa cum laude). He has studied various religions (Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, African religions, Islam) in the countries where they flourish (e.g. India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Korea, Japan, China, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Brazil, the Caribbean, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, Turkey).

In addition to modern and ancient Greek, he is fluent in the foreign languages English, French, and German. He also knows Latin, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Swahili, and Albanian.

Ai ka qenë anëtar i Komitetit Ndërkombëtar për Misionarizmin të Këshillit Botëror të Kishave (1963-1969), Sekretar për Kërkimin Misionar dhe Marrëdhëniet me Kishat Orthodhokse në KBK (Gjenevë 1969-1971). Ka organizuar dhe drejtuar Qendrën për Studimet Misionare në Universitetin e Athinës (1971-1974) dhe Qendrën Ndër-Orthodhokse në Athinë të Kishës Orthodhokse të Greqisë (1971-1974). Si Drejtor i Përgjithshëm i Shërbimit Apostolik të Kishës së Greqisë, ai promovoi programe teologjike, edukuese dhe botuese; në veçanti, zhvilloi sektorin e misioneve jashtë vendit. Në Afrikën Lindore (Kenia, Uganda, Tanzani), organizoi dhe zhvilloi misionet orthodhokse. Ai është vlerësuar si “Bamirës i Madh i Patriarkanës së Aleksandrisë dhe gjithë Afrikës”.
Afrika LindoreKryepiskopi Anastas ka luajtur një rol udhëheqës në ripërtëritjen bashkëkohore të Apostullimit nëpër botë të Kishës Orthodhokse. Për një dhjetëvjeçar 1981-91, ka punuar si lokum tenens (Kryepiskop mëkëmbës) i Kryepiskopatës së Shenjtë të Irinupolit – Afrika Perëndimore (Kenia, Uganda, Tanzani). Ai themeloi dhe organizoi Shkollën Patriarkale “Kryepiskopi i Qipros Makarios”, që e drejtoi për dhjetë vjet; dorëzoi 62 klerikë afrikanë dhe konsakroi 42 anagnostë-katekistë, me origjinë nga 8 fise afrikane. Në të njëjtën periudhë promovoi përkthimin e Liturgjisë Hyjnore në 4 gjuhë afrikane. U përkujdes për themelimin e rreth 150 famullive orthodhokse dhe për ndërtimin e dhjetëra kishave, për ndërtimin e 7 stacioneve misionare dhe punoi për hapjen e shkollave dhe qendrave mjekësore.
Shqipëri
Më 1991, caktohet nga Patriarku Ekumenik Eksark Patriarkal në Shqipëri. Në qershor 1992, ai u zgjodh Kryepiskop i Tiranës, Durrësit dhe i gjithë Shqipërisë. Përmes vështirësive të shumta, ringriti nga gërmadhat Kishën Orthodhokse Autoqefale të Shqipërisë: riorganizoi më tepër se 400 famulli (enori); themeloi Akademinë Teologjike “Ngjallja e Krishtit” në Durrës (1992), dy Lice kishtarë (Gjirokastër dhe Sukth të Durrësit), Shkollën e Muzikës Bizantine në Tiranë, të gjitha këto në godina me kushte bashkëkohore dhe me konvikte; shkolloi dhe dorëzoi 168 klerikë, të gjithë nënshtetas shqiptarë; themeloi 50 qendra rinore në qytete të ndryshme; u kujdes për përkthimin dhe botimin e librave liturgjikë dhe të librave të tjerë fetarë. U kujdes për ndërtimin e 150 kishave të reja, për restaurimin e 70 kisha-manastire monumente kulture, për rikonstruksionin e më tepër se 160 kisha ekzistuese, si dhe për 70 godina për qendra kishtare si: selia e Kryepiskopatës dhe e mitropolive, shkolla, qendra mjekësore, shtëpi pritjeje, mensa për të varfërit, kampe rinore etj. Vepra totale ndërtuese arrin në 450 ndërtesa.
Ai ka zhvilluar vepra bamirësie, duke shpërndarë qindra tonë ushqime, veshmbathje dhe ilaçe. Themeloi një gazetë të përmuajshme dhe tri revista, si edhe një stacion radiofonik. U përkujdes për ndërtimin e atelieve të Kishës (shtypshkronjës, fabrikës së qirinjve, zdrukthëtarisë, atelieve të ikonave dhe të restaurimit të tyre).
Në të njëjtën kohë, zhvilloi programe pionier në fushat e edukimit, shëndetësisë, kujdesit social, zhvillimit rural, kulturës dhe ekologjisë. Themeloi Qendrën Mjekësore Diagnostike me 24 specialitete në Tiranë dhe 3 qendra mjekësore në qytete të tjera; Universitetin “Logos” në Tiranë, 2 Institute të Formimit Profesional, 1 lice profesional, 3 shkolla fillore, 1 gjimnaz, 1 konvikt shkolle për vajza dhe 17 kopshte fëmijësh në qytete të ndryshme. Ai u përkujdes për ndërtimin e rrugëve, ujësjellësve, urave, riparimin e shkollave publike etj. Gjatë periudhës kritike të Kosovës (1999), organizoi një program të gjerë humanitar, që ndihmoi rreth 33.000 refugjatë kosovarë në vende të ndryshme të Shqipërisë. E lidhi Kishën e Shqipërisë me organizata ndërkombëtare kishtare. Ai është anëtar themelues i Shoqërisë Biblike Ndërkonfesionale të Shqipërisë dhe të Këshillit Ndërfetar të Shqipërisë. Gjatë tensioneve politike midis Greqisë dhe Shqipërisë, kontribuoi në zbutjen e tyre dhe në afrimin e dy vendeve. Nëpërmjet iniciativave dhe veprës së tij u është ofruar punë mijëra vetëve; u krijuan vepra serioze të strukturës sociale dhe Kisha Orthodhokse e Shqipërisë është bërë një faktor multidinamik shpirtëror dhe faktor progresi.
His contribution to the field of science, to contemporary Christian witness, to rapprochement with other Christian confessions, to interreligious dialogue and to peaceful coexistence between peoples and religions, is world-renowned. In 2000, following the proposal of the Athens Academy and many Albanian personalities, he was a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. He has been awarded many decorations and prizes from different countries.
He was honored with the Holy Cross of the Apostle and Evangelist Mark, First Class, of the Patriarchate of Alexandria (1985); with the Cross of Saint Catherine of Mount Sinai (1985); with that of Saints Cyril and Methodius of the Orthodox Church of Czechoslovakia (1986); with the Silver Medal of the Academy of Athens “as a promoter and pioneer of missionary work and labor” (1987); with the Medal of the Golden Cross with Laurel of the Red Cross of Greece (1994); with the Grand Cross of the Order of Honor of the Hellenic Republic (1997); with the Medal of Grand Prince Vladimir (First Class) of the Russian Church (1998); with the Medal of the Apostle Andrew of the Ecumenical Patriarchate (1999); with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Orthodox Crusaders of the Holy Sepulchre (2000); with the "Lifetime Achievement" award from the Greek Diaspora Council (2000).
