Constitutional Court suspends law for medical students

The Constitutional Court suspends the law "On the special treatment of students who follow the integrated study program of the second cycle "General Medicine". By means of a decision, the Court has accepted the request of a group of deputies, suspending the application of the law until the examination of the merits. The students have been led to protests against this decision by boycotting the auditoriums.

According to the law approved by the Assembly, first-year students, before registering at the university, will sign an agreement to commit themselves to stay for 5 years for employment after graduation, in health institutions and withdraw the diploma after fulfilling this obligation.

While for the students who are currently in the system, from the second year to the sixth year, again at the beginning of this academic year they will have to sign an agreement where they commit that they will stay respectively: students from the second year to in the fourth year, three years, while fifth and sixth year students, two years, employment in Albania.

The government insists that any medical student who does not fulfill the legal obligation to provide health services for 3 to 5 years in his country and chooses to leave Albania after his studies, will have to pay a fee of 240 thousand new lek for each year of study.
