Shaban Koçi will not sell chestnuts this year. In the village of Shkalle in the area of Dajti, together with the brothers, there is a large chestnut plantation. The production is decreasing year after year, as the Asian weevil has damaged the chestnut fruit since hatching.
In these areas, chestnut cultivation is the main source of income.
Ramiz Metaliaj, professor at UBT in the faculty of forest sciences, has been warning of this great damage to chestnuts for years.
Damage from Asian ringworm could be prevented, but even at this point, its cure can be effective if caught in time.
Until 2021, our country produces almost over 6,000 tons of chestnuts per year. At the world level, Albania at that time ranked 9th for the export of chestnuts, where most of the production goes to Italy.
