The final farewell is being given to Archbishop Anastasios Janullatos today. The funeral ceremony will begin at 11:00, at the "Resurrection of Christ" Cathedral in the capital, after the end of the Divine Liturgy. A2 CNN reports that the Archbishop's body will be placed for eternal rest in our country, in a special place within the Church.

The ceremony will be led by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Bartholomew, at the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ in the capital. Bartholomew will deliver the opening speech and lead the mass.

The funeral ceremony will be attended by leaders of the Orthodox Churches in the world, the highest heads of state and politics in Albania, as well as Greece. The Greek Prime Minister, Mitsotakis, will be present with a large delegation from Athens, including 5 ministers of his government cabinet, the leader of the Greek opposition, but also the Archbishop of Athens.

A large delegation led by the Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, is expected from the Vatican. The participation of the Patriarch of Israel, Theophilos of Jerusalem; Archbishop of Greece, Ieronymos; the Patriarchs of Cyprus, Alexandria; Bulgaria, Romania, etc. has also been confirmed.

Also expected at the ceremony are the Archbishop and clergy from Poland, leaders of "Saint Egidio" in Italy; a delegation from the World Council of Churches (an institution that includes all churches, Catholic, Protestant or Orthodox), representatives from the "Religions for Peace" union, a delegation from churches in the United States of America, etc.

Speeches will also be given by the granddaughter of Archbishop Anastasios, as well as by the two prime ministers, Rama and Mitsotakis.

The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all of Albania, Anastas Janullatos, passed away at the age of 95, on January 25, 2025, at the "Evangelismos" hospital in Athens, where he had been hospitalized after his health condition deteriorated, A2 CNN reports.

Since 1992, he has lived in Albania, where he has led the Orthodox Church, and has always expressed the desire for his body to rest in our country.

Archbishop Anastasios was the rebuilder and reviver of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, which he completely rebuilt from the ruins after the fall of the atheist regime. With his vision and work, he rebuilt church life from the foundations, built hundreds of churches, created educational and charitable institutions, and formed a new generation of clergy, offering an uninterrupted and sacrificial service for more than 33 years.

Janullatos was the Archbishop of the Orthodox Church of Albania since 1992. He was honored with 27 medals and awards and in 2000 was nominated for the Nobel Prize.
