Prime Minister Edi Rama and the Minister of Health and Social Protection, Albana Koçiu, have inspected the reconstruction works of the "Queen Geraldine" Obstetric and Gynecological University Hospital, an investment from the state budget.
Minister Koçiu stated that the works are expected to be completed within this year, along with high-tech furnishings and equipment, transforming it into a leading center in providing obstetric and gynecological care, as well as ensuring high standards of healthcare for mothers and children.
She emphasized that this investment in an area of about 6 thousand square meters includes laboratory, imaging, emergency services, the Women's Center, as well as two Obstetrics and Gynecology services. "The reconstruction of the "Queen Geraldine" maternity hospital is being carried out in two phases. The first phase also involves the construction of the main building of about 6 thousand square meters and was completed at the end of last year. In the new building, 3 floors above ground and 1 floor underground are the main services, the obstetrics-gynecology service, the imaging service, the women's center, which is all newly built," said Koçiu, adding that in the meantime the second phase has begun with the reconstruction of the neonatology facilities.
Also, Koçiu pointed out that it has been possible to double the capacities, 7 operating rooms, 6 delivery rooms with modern conditions, as well as providing the neonatology service and the first prematurity center. "From the 260 beds that are currently there, the bed capacities have increased to 320. Each of the services also has an intensive care unit. With the neonatology service, the entire hospital corpus is completed. Meanwhile, in the second phase we also have the prematurity center divided into two clinics. The clinic for mothers who have high risk during pregnancy and the clinic for children who are born prematurely. It is a new center that is being created here and comes as a result of the addition and organization of new facilities", Koçiu underlined.
She added that work will also begin on the reconstruction of other services, including their relocation to new premises, in order to ensure that services are not interrupted at any time. The 2025 Budget also supports the "Fertility Package" in the "Queen Geraldine" Maternity Hospital, which will provide free in vitro fertilization services with advanced technology for all couples who wish to have a child.
