The Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and all Albania, Anastas Janullatos, has passed away at the age of 95, A2 CNN reports. The announcement was made by the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, which said that Archbishop Janullatos passed away at the Evangelismos Hospital in Athens, where he had been hospitalized after his health deteriorated.
Janullatos was the Archbishop of the Orthodox Church of Albania since 1992. He was honored with 27 medals and awards and in 2000 was nominated for the Nobel Prize.
It will be the Graceful Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, which, as per the Statute of the Church, will meet below to decide who will be the new Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.
The Synod will consist of; His Grace, Joan - Metropolitan of Korça; His Grace, Dhimitri - Metropolitan of Gjirokastra; His Grace, Nikola - Metropolitan of Apollonia and Fier; His Grace, Andoni - Metropolitan of Elbasan; His Grace, Nathanael - Metropolitan of Amantia and His Grace, Asti - Metropolitan of Berat.
Meanwhile, referring to the Church Statute, the election of the new Archbishop must take place within a period of 3 to 6 months. (A2 Televizion)
