Relinquishing citizenship for a passport of another country is one of the conditions that many European countries have. More Albanians, mainly the workforce who have emigrated for a better life, are facing this phenomenon.
In Albania, according to the data of the Ministry of Interior, in the first 9 months of the year, 692 Albanians left their citizenship, 189 more than the same period of the previous year.
The most numerous ages that made this decision in the first part of the year are young people, but also the labor force between the ages of 20 and 49.
"There are few countries that allow dual citizenship. Normally, the host country demands that you give up your citizenship and take advantage of that of the country where you live. Obtaining citizenship is a lengthy procedure and qualified persons have priority. This process can take up to 7-8 years", said Rafael Todhe, a lawyer in Germany.
A number of facilities force Albanians to abandon their citizenship. "They do not benefit from many advantages that the states give. If they receive it, they are European citizens and benefit first of all from free movement, change of residence.
"The biggest part that pushed them are 3 indicators: a better job, better education, better health", said Eldisa Cirogu, immigration researcher.
Relinquishing citizenship is considered by emigration researchers as a sign of non-return of Albanians to their homeland, thus bringing negative consequences for Albania.
"Many countries of the European Union do not allow dual citizenship, among them Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain do not allow it. Countries where Albanian emigration flows are greater.
In addition to the economic contraction, the large labor force leaves, on the other hand we perceive a demographic contraction, faster aging of our population."
On the other hand, the demands of foreigners to obtain Albanian citizenship are increasing. This number has doubled in 2023, reaching 1,126 citizens by September. (A2 Televizion)
