The Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania has announced that the Holy Synod will convene on March 16, 2025 to elect a new archbishop, following the death of the late Archbishop, Anastasios Janullatos.
The election will take place on the Second Sunday of Lent, after the Divine Liturgy, and will follow the provisions of the Statute of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania.
According to the Secretary of the Holy Synod, the election process will take place at the Synodal Center and will be an important moment for the Orthodox Church, as it will determine the new leader of the Church and the Orthodox believers in Albania.
Anastas Janullatos, who led the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania for more than 30 years, passed away on January 25, 2025, after failing to win the battle with illness. Janullatos was elected Archbishop of the Orthodox Church in June 1992 and on August 2 of the same year he was enthroned as Archbishop of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania in the Cathedral Church of Tirana.
