For a career, better pay and better living conditions. These are the main reasons for the departure of Albanians, identified in the Global Migration Report for 2024, compiled by the International Organization for Migration. Albania has mainly lost its skilled workforce, but also its low-skilled workforce, the report highlights.

"I think that today more than ever we are facing a reality where it is no longer the employer who determines the rules of the game, but the employee," Fatjon Dragoshi, an expert on employment issues, told A2 CNN.

This is because, especially in sectors such as tourism, fashion, and agriculture, the lack of employees is not only hindering expansion, but is also threatening existence.

"Because many citizens are withdrawing from Western countries. Now, not only those who are in trouble and in need and who have no other alternatives, but even the most qualified among us are choosing to leave," Dragoshi adds.

The report also highlighted the illegal migration of Albanians to the United Kingdom, risking their lives in the English Channel in small boats or dinghies. The emigration of Albanians has produced negative consequences for the country, as there is a shortage of workers, the productivity of the economy is being affected and on the other hand the pension scheme is 'suffering' due to contributors.

"In this sense, companies in Albania have a life or death issue, I would say they are almost completely dependent, especially on young people. Therefore, their entrepreneurial plans must focus on the employee," the employment expert underlines.

Businesses themselves, which have been stingy with salaries, as the average salary in the private sector in the country has remained at less than 700 euros, are trying to fill the gap created by the lack of employees with foreign workers, mainly from third countries. (A2 Televizion)
