On the 5th anniversary of SPAK, through the Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, the US Department of State conveyed the message about the need to extend the 9-year mandate of special prosecutors.
"To ensure that SPAK will continue without interruption the fight against corruption and organized crime in the future we believe that SPAK prosecutors should be allowed to apply to serve again after the end of their current mandate. Failure to do so risks interrupting the most successful effort against organized crime and corruption in Albanian history and risks losing your most experienced professionals and their institutional knowledge", Kasanof.
The extension of the mandate, through the possibility of reapplying, was requested earlier in the Assembly by the former head of SPAK, Arben Kraja, and by the current leader, Altin Dumani, because in order to implement it, legal changes must be made. The head of SPAK said that the first 5-year-old of the institution had given clear messages, writes A2.
"We have investigated officials at all levels, prosecutors, judges, former high-ranking police officers and politicians, as well as criminal groups and organizations, giving a clear message that justice knows no sides and that there are no untouchables, if the laws of this country are violated, violated, violated. We have strengthened institutional cooperation with local and foreign law enforcement agencies. And according to him, this had not come without difficulties and costs.
"Corruption or crime cannot disappear overnight; we have faced attempts to undermine our work, with insults, slander, threats against us or our family members. But in front of them we have gathered together, as a single body of colleagues. We have understood how important is the independence of the institution, where we exercise our duties and how important is the integrity of each of us. If anyone thinks otherwise, you are wrong! We have sworn to serve the country, Albanian justice and Albanian citizens".
The head of the EU delegation, Silvio Gonzato, underlined that in just a few years, SPAK is synonymous with success in Albania, but according to him, we must also look to the future. "We should not rest on our laurels, the outcome of the EU membership process will continue to rely on the capacity and work it will do to fight organized crime and corruption. By seizing and confiscating these assets that have been put in an illegal form" During the first 5 years of operation, SPAK has registered almost 1809 investigations for almost 2500 people, as well as seizing and confiscating over 182 million euros of assets, secured through means of illegal.
